Wikipedia defines collage as “a work of art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.” It is deemed to have emerged as a visual art form in the 20th century, spearheaded by painters such as George Braque and Pablo Picasso.
Nowadays, collage art usually involves photographs, pieces of colored handmade paper, strings; paper twines, beads, or even dried flowers, and really makes fine scrapbook material. Little did I know that collage could also be used as a technique in fashion design, until I bumped into Aelisheva.
Aelisheva is an independent couture house founded in 1997. It is the brainchild of stage & screen costume designer “Sanja” Zivka Jovanovic, and designer artist Alyse Radenovic. It is home to original, handmade, artisan, ready-to-wear clothes, which embody collage fashion using fabric scraps and trims.
Through Aelisheva, Jovanovic and Radenovic hope to bring haute couture to the people by making its prices easier on the pocket. Explore the gallery and it is likely that you may chance upon a creative piece that would just cost around $100.
